She was never anyone’s first choice. Somehow, there was somebody that was always better than her in everything. While growing up, she was neither the favorite nor the black sheep of the family. Perhaps her mother and father treated her this way because she didn’t have any special talents like her two other siblings. Perhaps she was deluding herself. Perhaps not.
In school, she excelled. But there was always that one girl that was smarter than her. No matter how she tried, she always never came close. You would never find her in any school competitions, either, because she’s always considered as the second choice. Down in some unknown hall, you would see people talking about her, “She’s okay, but..” Always with the word “but.”
One year, she tried theater. She figured, since being herself had brought her nothing, why not be somebody else for a while? However, she never got any of the part that she wanted, constantly being rejected because of the presence of someone who “fits the part more perfectly.”
She had a few friends. But when you see them together, she was always the one you’d remember less. It was not that she faded in the background, you’d just notice her last. Boys love to that. One time, she finally thought someone noticed her, and her alone. But he was just trying to use her to get to her other friend. They always do.
But regardless of everything, she believed that good things come for those who wait. So in the end, she remained waiting. Maybe you saw her once on your way to work, while you were late for school, or when you were out on a date..
But I doubt you’d remember her.
